Okay, I'm back and finally have some time to sit down and write a blog post. In December, I was home in B.C. and happened to see a flight alert for a cheap deal to San Diego. Since I have heard such great things about the Rock N Roll race there I decided to book it and go on a solo trip. A few days later, my blogger-friend Ashley said she was going to come and then later Jen and her husband Tom jumped in! Jen, Tom and I have ran a few destination races together so why not keep the tradition going?
Ashley and I left Calgary Friday morning and I ended up sitting with our running-friends Susan and her husband Kevin. They had rented a car and were staying close to our hotel so they ended up giving us a ride once we landed which was really sweet. Kevin even let us girls stop by Trader Joes for a quick shopping trip on the way.
Once we checked into our hotel we headed to the Expo.
If you've never been to a Rock N Roll Race you're missing out. The races are so fun and the Expo is HUGE! There's so much to see and do there and you could easily spend hours wandering around. We kept it at about an hour and I left with a new Nathan handheld water bottle, some sparkly soul headbands, a new pair of ProCompression socks and a new running hat from Bic Bands.
After the expo, I headed to the nearby Gas Lamp district to meet Jen and Tom for a drink. Ashley joined us shortly after and we made our way to Tin Taco for probably the BEST shrimp tacos I've ever had (I ate here twice on this trip but easily could have gone there every day!)
We had plans to go see the Padres play and the stadium was easily within walking distance which was nice. It was so fun to watch the game (and people watch) and also to watch Ashley experience it all as it was her first live baseball experience.
We called it a night soon after and headed to bed for our first of two early wake-up calls.
Saturday morning, we were up early for the 5K (which I'll re-cap in another post.)
A group of us grabbed breakfast after and then spent the rest of the day exploring San Diego. We caught an Uber to La Jolla and enjoyed some downtime, people-watching, on the beach.
We met Jen and Tom for a carb-loading pasta supper at Buno Appetito in Little Italy (highly recommend this place if you're ever in SD!)
Once again, we were in bed early for a 4am wake-up call.
Sunday's half marathon was a BLAST (can't wait to write the race recap for this one) and then we were lucky enough to score front row standing spots to Gavin Degraw. Rock N Roll brings in a headliner act to play before or after every race. I love Gavin and haven't been able to see him live before. He did NOT disappoint! Plus, everyone in his band was a total band which was awesome (and also made me wish I had made time to shower and change before the show hahahaha)
After the concert, we headed to the unofficial after-party hosted by Pro Compression. It was so wonderful to chat with some of my running friends and also to meet a lot of people I've been interacting with online!
I grabbed lunch at Tin Taco and then headed back to the hotel to shower and change and head out to explore.
I headed to the harbour to look at the Navy ships. My brother is in the Canadian Navy and has spent a lot of time in SD. It was cool to see where he's been and to take in a little history.
I grabbed some supper at a pub in Little Italy, followed by Frozen Yogurt and then crashed fairly early.
Sunday morning, I was up at 5am so I decided to go for one last run. I did about 5 miles, along the harbour, stopping for lots of photo ops.
Then, it was time to pack my suitcase, grab breakfast and head to the airport.
Thank you San Diego for an amazing time! I'll definitely be back!
