Becoming a personal trainer, my dream fitness job & moving forward
If you would have told me, a few years ago, I was going to be a personal trainer I would have laughed. Health and fitness has only become a recent passion of mine. Seriously, I grew up hating gym class and any form of exercising (besides cheerleading which I mainly did so I could watch cute boys get sweaty and because I loved (and still do) to dance.
Now, I can't imagine my life without it.
Yes, my passion is running (clearly, or else my blog name wouldn't make much sense) but I've also developed a love of strength and cross training.
This weekend, I took my personal training certification. I haven't taken a class in YEARS so it was hard but it was also really fun. Adult learning is so important. I love challenging myself and stepping out of my comfort zone (apparently, I should have listened more in Grade 10 biology!)
My amazing teacher Ali (she's the reason I even thought about coaching!!)
After taking an Orange Theory Fitness Class with some friends, a few months ago, I knew immediately I had to become a coach. I thought I would need my group fitness certification, and even took the course, but then figured out the personal training certification was a better fit with the OTF principals. OTF is more of a group personal training experience. I submitted my resume, a few weeks ago, and now I'm waiting to find out if I'll be selected to undergo the next stage of the hiring process. Fingers crossed!!
I love that OTF has a cardio and strength training component. I also love that I'll be able to use my knowledge of running to help people.
And, that takes me to my next thought. I'm thinking about taking my run coach certification (something I never thought I would say!!) I took my personal trainer certification mostly for myself so I could better understand what I needed to be doing to supplement my running. I think the run coach certification could also help me become a better runner. I've been unofficially "coaching" some people on the side but I think it would be beneficial to have some more knowledge. KNOWLEDGE IS POWER! :)
And, finally, my fall goal is to take a nutrition course. I want to learn more about fueling for workouts, identifying deficiencies in diets and focusing on what I need for my body.
So, that's what I'm thinking right now.
Yes, it's going to be a lot of work and a big commitment but I'm excited.
None of this is set in stone, obviously, as I still have a full-time job, am a single mom and like to have some room in my life for friends and myself.
So, that's what's going on in my life right now.
I write my personal training exam in three weeks and then I'll be able to write plans for anyone who is interested.
How was your weekend?
Have you taken any adult learning courses lately?
If you aren't already doing it, what's your dream job?
Hi, I'm Kaella, a single mom, reporter and avid runner. I love sharing my workouts, race-recaps, and experiences in group fitness class, with you. I also talk about my four-year-old son London a lot. I'm slightly obsessed with NYC, Starbucks and 5 Cent Candies.
