World Inflammatory Bowel Disease Day

First of all, I want to thank everyone for their outpouring of support on my latest post about my weight gain. I'm overwhelmed by all the messages I received and haven't had a chance to respond to them all yet. I'm working on it!

I wanted to take a break from my normal "Thinking Out Loud" Thursday post and talk about something else.

Today is World IBD Day.

What's IBD?

Inflammatory Bowel Disease as described by Crohns and Colitis Canada as:

"diseases that inflame the lining of the GI (gastrointestinal) tract and disrupt your body’s ability to digest food, absorb nutrition and eliminate waste in a healthy manner."

Symptoms include abdominal pain, cramping, gas, bloating, fatigue, diarrhea (possible bloody) and loss of appetite.

Crohn's disease can occus anywhere in the GI track but is usually in the lower part of the small bowel (where mine is) and colon. Ulcerative Colitis affects portions of the large intestine, rectum and anus.

There is NO cure for IBD.

It's been 12 years since I was diagnosed. Since then, I've had several surgeries and hospital stays and been on different medications to try and put my disease into remission.

I've posted about my story a few times including here and was also featured as a guest poster on PB Fingers in May 2010.

So, today I wear purple for everyone living, or supporting someone, with IBD.

Today, I think about my Nana who lost her battle with IBD 17 years ago.

Today, I think about London and I pray the genetic factor doesn't affect him.

Today, I am thankful I am managing my symptoms with diet and exercise and only having the occasional flare.
