Race Recap: Apocalypse Series Half Marathon Series

Well, my 2014 race season is officially over. I ended up running 12 races: 5 Half Marathons, 2 10's,
1 8K and 4 5k's. It was an amazing year and I can't believe how far I've come as a runner!

My race season didn't quite end the way I anticipated. I had my final race, a half marathon, scheduled for last Saturday. The weather forecast was looking brutal and I was going back and forth between running outside and running all, or a portion, on the treadmill. Truthfully, I wanted to run outside since I had just PR'd a 10K in less than ideal conditions. I posted this to instagram the night before and was feeling really inspired by all your comments... thank you!!

That all changed when I woke up at 5:45am and looked out the window. It had snowed over night, the wind was howling and, according to my weather app, it felt like -35 degrees outside!

The race organizers had posted the event was going ahead but they were encouraging people to run as long as they wanted and to not stay outside longer than an hour. I really wanted to get the distance in, and earn my medal, so I decided to run the half marathon on the treadmill.

Go away, snow!
I hopped on the treadmill with my IPad, put on Sex and The City, and just started running. The furthest I have ever run on a treadmill is 12 miles, while training for the NYC Half, so I knew I could do it. The first few miles were tough. I had to take a few walking breaks and eat some gels but I just kept going. I didn't give myself any other choice but to finish. Around the 10 mile mark, London woke up and he was my little cheerleader for the last 3.1 miles!

I finished my half marathon on the treadmill in 1:55:46 but that doesn't include the walking breaks. I would say it was just under 2 hours total.

After my run, I hopped off and stretched/foam rolled and then had breakfast.

I quickly showered, and changed, and rushed out the door to the 10am race. I still wanted to run a portion of the event but didn't know how far I would be able to go. My legs were feeling good but I've never ran more than 13.1 miles! About 75 people registered for the race and, I would say, about half of that showed up. It was a super hero themed run so everyone did their best to still show off their costumes while staying warm!

After some quick instructions, from the race director, we were off!

It was actually a beautiful day to run. The sun was shining and it looked beautiful with the fresh snow. Don't get me wrong, it was cold! I was wearing FIVE layers and somehow managed to stay warm. Only my face (the exposed part) and hands were numb!

Even my Iphone stopped working it was so cold!

I ended up running 5K, with Leighann, before calling it a day. They had hot chocolate, chips and chocolate at the end and everyone stood around eating (and shivering!) I need to mention that Leighann not only ran the half marathon distance outside (ROCK STAR) but then went home and completed her first post-baby full marathon on the treadmill. She is AMAZING!!

As for myself, not only am I REALLY proud of myself for running in the cold, I also logged my longest run ever--- 16 MILES!!! It was a huge confidence boost with marathon training just around the corner!

A HUGE thank you to the organizers, volunteers (you all are INCREDIBLE) and fellow racers. What a FUN day!!! I'll be back next year!! Fingers crossed, it's a little warmer ;)

I mean that in the best way possible. Thank god I didn't sign up - my body would've declined the cold. My phone did that to me this weekend too!! Hahahaa

    1. HA HA HA, thanks! I never even thought about that! I have no idea how I'm going to run a marathon but I guess I used to think about 10 k's, and eventually half-marathons, the same way!!

  7. Wow congrats on your distance PR! I think my farthest run on the treadmill is 11 miles so I feel your pain. Great job with the half and with going outside for a few more miles! And your outfit was really cute too by the way :)

Next, that you ran in that amount of snow and freezing temps!!! You are a champ. And lastly that you ran 16 miles that day! Such awesome accomplishments. Also you've run so many races this year. 1. Thank you!! I have a love/hate relationship with the treadmill! I rely on it in the winter, a lot, or when I have my son and don't want to bundle him up for a stroller run. I appreciate your sweet message. It means a lot!!!!

  10. Wow, that is incredible that you can run that far on the treadmill!! I last for about a mile before I am bored out of my mind. It sounds like you ended your racing season on a good note even though it wasn't quite what you had planned :)
