Race Recap: LRPS Half Marathon

Exactly one year ago, I ran my first half marathon. Today, I returned to the event to run my fifth half. My second half in six days.

Last night, I got together with some of  the ladies running the race including TawnyaBeckyLindseyDanielle, Nicole, Leighann, and Alycia (plus June because she loves an excuse to eat, drink and visit) for a pre-race supper. Tawnya hosted a carb-loading feast at her place and there was lots of pasta, wine and desserts. It was a wonderful night with an amazing group of women.

It was Lindsey's 30th birthday and we celebrated her, and the other September birthday girls, with some delicious chocolate cupcakes!

We called it a night around 8 and Becky, her son Liam, and I headed home. We stayed up talking for a bit before dragging our butts to bed around 10-10:30. It was so nice to have them stay with me. With London away, the house feels so quiet and empty. She surprised me with beautiful flowers and a bottle of wine which was so sweet!

RACE DAY:

This morning, I woke up at 4:30 and couldn't get back to sleep. I decided to
eat my usual bread and peanut butter in bed and check twitter and Facebook. I ended up falling back asleep eventually for a bit before finally getting up around 6:15.

We headed to the race start for 7:30 and, after a quick bathroom break, headed to the start. I actually wasn't nervous and just wanted to have fun. I had run the Canmore Half six days ago and didn't want to put any pressure on myself!

Lindsey asked me at the start if she could run with me for a bit. Obviously, I was totally okay with that. I love her and don't get enough face-to-face chat time as I would like. Spoiler: We ended up running the whole 21K together!!

The miles seriously flew by. I remember hitting mile 5 and feeling like we just started. She says we pushed each other but I really feel like she pushed me. Lindsey is wayyyy faster than me but stayed with me and paced me. She encouraged me when I needed it and made me feel like we could finish strong!

My headphones died at mile 3 and then my Nike running app reset at mile 4 so I was running blind. I didn't care.

The whole run was awesome! We chatted about anything and everything and it was a much needed therapy session for me. I remember tearing up a few times because I honestly wouldn't have had as much fun without her. She reminded me, without even saying it, that running is a community and we are there to support each other.

started to feel the pain around mile 10 but Lindsey kept saying we could beat my PR if we kept the pace. I didn't even care about that but I knew I could keep going. We played cat and mouse with two other girls along the course. They passed us on the downhill and we silently agreed to make it our goal to pass them before the finish. We did.

Before I knew it, we spotted the finish and I said "let's go" and we sprinted to the end!

Official Time: 1:54:42
Overall: 60/131
30-39 Age Group: 12/26
Gender: 25/69

28 seconds short of my PR but an amazing race!

I turned to Lindsey as soon as we crossed the finish line and gave her the biggest hug!  She was my rock today!

We immediately met up with the other girls. They are rocked their races and I'm so proud of each of them! Thank you to them, and everyone who texted me, for your constant support and encouragement!

Race was followed by a delicious brunch with the girls, husbands and kids.

This is the REAL reason I run ;)

Time to focus on my next race. It's a 5K in October so I'm going to have to do some speed work!

Anyone else race this weekend?
How was it?
What are you training for?

The last two days have made me so thankful for all you girls, and shows friends don't have to live close. You are an awesome and strong lady, Mom and runner. I know this won't be the last time we cross a finish line together :) xoxo

  4. Congratulations! I will run my 5th half marathon next month. And that Nike app, although I do love it, it can get on my nerves at times.

  5. Even I teared up! Congrats on your great time! The nike app, I noticed when I was running, became increasingly more off on the distance. When I finished the 10km, my app was only at 9.25km - threw me off!!!
