My First Race- Tuesdays On The Run

Today I'm linking up with Patty, April  and Erica for their "Tuesday On the Run" series. Thanks for hosting ladies!!

Today's topic is "My First Race!"

My first official race was a 6K in March 2011. I was fairly new to running and didn't really know what training was. I ran the distance a few times prior and felt confident leading up to it. I had no goal in mind.

Then, I found out I was pregnant with my son. It was too early to tell anyone so I decided to run/walk it with a friend who was returning to running after her first child. We finished in 54 minutes. I was 10 weeks pregnant.

Unfortunately, I had some health issues three weeks later and almost lost the baby, twice. I was put on pelvic rest and didn't run the rest of my pregnancy.

After I had London I knew I wanted to return to running and racing. I signed up for that same race and started a couch to 10K program. I wanted to do the 10K distance that year. I only did the distance twice beforehand (and both with a running stroller) so I knew I could do it just not sure how long it would take me.

There's a HUGE hill at the end of the race. I had plans to practice it beforehand but it didn't happen. I did have to walk a few minutes on the hill but I was okay with that. I ended up finishing the 2013 race in 1:06:45!

It was my first post-baby race and I was so proud of myself. I ended up running nine more races that year, including my first half marathon. I even got my 10K PR (55:10 in the November.)

This year, I returned to my first race with some girlfriends. I ran the whole hill for the first time and finished in 57:06. I was running the NYC Half the next week so I didn't go full out. I had a lot if fun running with my run club ladies!

It's nice to return to that race and see how far I've come. I'll likely be back again next March!

What was your first race?

  1. Congrats on your 10K successes! So sorry to hear about your difficult pregnancy. I have yet to do a 10K...it really is my dream distance besides the marathon!

  3. London is so adorable! Great job on your races. I didn't run during pregnancy, but was so happy to get back to it afterwards.

  4. I cannot even remember my first race, probably a local 5km for charity though. My first race as I call it would be the Woody's Half that I ran in May 2010.

  5. What a cutie-pie! Yeah, I'd say if you ran the distance pushing a running stroller, you're pretty prepared for the race! Thanks for linking up with us today!

  6. You're still my hero for being so great at running with the stroller. I still find it so difficult.

My first race was a Spartan Sprint which was 5k with obstacles. It was super fun and led me to becoming an obstacle race addict. Still trying to decide if I want to do the 10k Spartan in September.
